Although the first Friday in May is always a special time for Girl Scout of Central Illinois. Due to COVID-19 we have rescheduled this event.

This is the day that thousands of Girl Scouts from across the state gather at the Illinois Capitol for a day of advocacy, education, and fun!  This year Girl Scout Day at the Capitol will be held on July 31, 2020, from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the YWCA lot (Corner of Fifth and Jackson St., Springfield IL). 

Commemorative t-shirts are also available for pre-order until July 10, 2020. No t-shirt orders will be processed after that time. When registering, you will be prompted to order a t-shirt.

What is the schedule for the day?

Schedule for the event:

9:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. - Check in at the YWCA lot.

9:45 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. - We will leave the YWCA and walk to the steps of the Capitol. The march will be led by the winners of the banner contest.  Grand Marshals of the march will be Gold Award Girl Scouts. Chants and songs will be shared in the confirmation packet. 

10:30 a.m. - 10:50 a.m. - At the Capitol steps, we will listen to inspirational speeches from several role models that represent courage, character and confidence.

10:50 .am. - 12:30 p.m. - After the rally, you will have free time in downtown Springfield. At this time you can enjoy lunch, visit the Capitol, and explore other sights. Check out learn more about Springfield. 

12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. - GSCI will host a Girl Scout Expo at the YWCA.  Booths will include badge themed activities and community based organizations. The Girl Scout Trefoil Boutique and concession stand will be open during the Girl Scout Expo. 

2:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. - We will end the day with a closing celebration with closing remarks from a special guest and a balloon drop.     

What is the theme for the day?

This Girl Scout Day at the Capitol we are celebrating the suffrage movement and the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment. Commemorate the occasion with a march to the Illinois State Capitol and listen to an inspiring speech at the Lincoln Statue. Explore downtown Springfield, then celebrate with other Girl Scouts at the Girl Expo through fun and educational activities focused on the Girl Scout Ways Badge and special women who have made history.

What should I wear for the day?

You will be representing the Girl Scouts. If you did not order a t-shirt, please wear a uniform or other Girl Scout t-shirt. Comfortable shoes are a must as we will be walking throughout the day. This is a rain or shine event, so dress for the weather.

Where should I park?

There is ample parking downtown Springfield. The closest parking garage is at 6th and Capitol (Hoogland). A full list of parking availablity is listed here.

GSCI is not responsible for any parking fees, tickets, or towing expenses.   

Where can I stay in Springfield?

I am a Gold Award Girl Scout, how can I participate in the honor guard?

We are looking for Gold Award Girl Scouts to help lead the march and carry the flags. If you are interested, please contact Erin Lockwood at  

How do I get a tour of the Capitol?

Request a tour at the Information Desk inside the Capitol. Tours take place every half hour (no tours from noon to 1:00 p.m.) Group tours of 15 or more may be booked online at or by calling 217-789-2360. 

Who are my legislators?

We recommend contacting your legislators for a meeting. Visit for your legislator’s contact information. Even if you do not meet with your legislator, a kind note and a box of cookies can be left at their office.    

Can siblings attend Girl Scout Day at the Capitol?

Yes, this is a family event.  If a sibling is attending and wants to participate in the activities, we ask that you register the sibling along with your Girl Scout.  

Will there be a store for souvenirs?

Yes, the GSCI shop will be at the YWCA lot all day with souvenirs from the day.
